The Disciple’s Relationship To His Brethren

 

Introduction: Today, we continue our study of discipleship. We will look at the relationship a disciple has towards other disciples, our brethren.

 

I. A Member of the Body: The Disciple’s Place

                A. We are the body of Christ: 1 Corinthians 12:27

                                1. One body, many members: 1 Corinthians 12:12, 20, 27

                                2. We are baptized into one body: 1 Corinthians 12:13

                                3. We are united together: 1 Corinthians 1:10

B. Benefits of being in the body:

                                1. Salvation: Acts 2:47, Ephesians 5:23

                                2. Identification with Christ: Romans 12:5

                                3. Support and Edification: Hebrews 10:24-25

                C. Responsibilities of being in the body:

                                1. Respect God’s plan and purpose: Romans 12:3-8

                                2. Respect the authority of Christ: Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 3:17

                                3. Respect the other members:

a. Have care for one another: 1 Corinthians 12:25-26

b. Keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: Ephesians 4:1-6

4. Do our share: Ephesians 4:16; 2:10

               

II. “My Brother’s Keeper: The Disciple’s Support

                A. Love one another: Matthew 22:36-40, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

                B. Consider one another: Hebrews 10:24, Philippians 2:4

                C. Exhort one another: 1 Thessalonians 5:14, 11

                D. Restore one another: Galatians 6:1, James 5:19-20

                E. Be Kind to one another: Ephesians 4:32

                F. Be a Good Example: 2 Thessalonians 3:9

                G. Forgive one another: Matthew 18:21-35, Colossians 3:13, Matthew 6:14-15

 

III. A Servant: The Disciple’s Greatness

                A. Jesus came to serve: Matthew 20:28, John 13:1-17, Philippians 2:7

B. The greatest in the Kingdom serve others: Matthew 20:26-27, 23:11-12, Mark 9:35

C. Paul was a servant: 1 Corinthians 9:19

D. The Good Samaritan was a servant: Luke 10:25-37

E. We must be a servant: Galatians 5:13

F. One who has the heart of a servant is:

          1. Available to serve: 2 Timothy 2:4, John 9:4

          2. Attentive for opportunity: Ecclesiastes 11:4, Galatians 6:10, Romans 12:10-13

          3. Takes action: James 2:15-16, Matthew 25:35-40

4. Is clothed with humility: 1 Peter 5:5, Matthew 18:3-4, Philippians 2:3-4

5. Faithful in their obligations: 1 Corinthians 4:2

G. Remember the unprofitable servant: Matthew 24:47-51, 25:14-30

 

Conclusion: Here we see the relationship a disciple is to have with other disciples. Let us ensure that we are acting properly towards one another.
