The Unity That Produces Joy
Philippians 2:1–4
I. The Motivation for Unity (v.1)
Paul’s four “if” statements assume these blessings are true:
• Encouragement in Christ – 2 Corinthians 1:5
• Comfort from love – 1 John 4:11
• Participation in the Spirit – Ephesians 4:3–4
• Affection & sympathy – Colossians 3:12
Gospel transformation leads to gospel relationships.
II. The Marks of Unity (v.2)
“Complete my joy…” through:
1. Same mind – Romans 15:5–6
2. Same love – John 15:12
3. Full accord (One soul) – Romans 12:15–16
4. One mind (Purpose) – 1 Corinthians 1:10
Unity of heart, love, feeling, and mission.
III. The Enemies of Unity (v.3a)
• Selfish ambition – Galatians 5:15
• Conceit (vain glory) – Proverbs 16:18, James 3:16
We are one body—not in competition.
IV. The Path to Unity (vv. 3b–4)
• Humility – Romans 12:10, 1 Peter 5:5
• Considering others – Galatians 6:2
Think of yourself less—not less of yourself.
V. The Model of Unity: Christ (vv. 5–11)
• Christ humbled Himself → Exalted by God – Philippians 2:9–11
Our mindset must match Christ’s humility and service.
VI. Practical Application: Cultivating Unity
1. Examine your heart – Psalm 139:23–24
2. Practice active love – Hebrews 10:24
3. Serve behind the scenes – Matthew 6:4
4. Keep your eyes on the gospel – Ephesians 4:32
The Joy of Unity
Unity is intentional and gospel-rooted.
• Psalm 133:1 – Good and pleasant
• John 13:35 – A witness to the world
Unity produces peace, joy, and a powerful testimony.
Conclusion: Unity Must Be Pursued
• Ephesians 4:3 – Make every effort to keep unity
Unity is not passive—it’s protected and cultivated.
